Candida Recipe – Blanched Greens and Amazing Sauces

If you have ever gone through a candida protocol, you the eating can be a bit tough.

Last night, Natasha and I (I help clean) made a great dish that we wanted to share.  To me, the sauces made the dish, below are the recipes to make the sauces.

The items we made were:

  1. Blanched greens with walnut lemon dressing
  2. Mixed green salad with a pumpkin seed cilantro sauce (salad not pictured)
  3. Steamed broccoli – you know how to make this 🙂
  4. Avocado – slice ’em up
  5. Pickled onions

Here is how we prepared them:

Blanched Greens – Collards, Spinach, and Swiss Chard

Remove leaves from stems. (Swiss chard stems are edible, so save and cook them) Blanch greens in a large pot of boiling salted water, 15 seconds (spinach and chard) to 2 minutes (kale and collards); drain. When cool enough to handle, squeeze out excess liquid.  Let the veggies cool completely,s in a single layer on a rimmed baking sheet. Greens can be stored in an airtight container in refrigerator up to 4 days.

Walnut lemon dressing

1 c. lightly roasted walnuts
1-2 cloves garlic, minced
1/8 cup lemon juice
1 TSP Ume plum vinegar
Pinch of real salt (I prefer Himalayan sea salt; it provides essential minerals that benefit the body)
3/4 c. pure, filtered water
Optional for a variation: add 2 teaspoons fresh dill, chopped

To make:
Roast walnuts at 350 degrees until lightly browned. When cooled, add all ingredients to a blender or food processor, and blend until smooth.

Pepita (pumpkin seed) Cilantro Sauce

1 c. pumpkin seeds toasted

2 c. cilantro leaves

1 – 1 ½ c. water

2 Tbsp. lemon juice, freshly squeezed

½ Tsp. Ume plum vinegar (you can substitute another kind if you don’t have this)

Dash of salt

To Make:

Toast seeds until golden (keep the pan moving so you don’t scorch the seeds). Add all ingredients including seeds to the blender and blend until smooth.

You Can Still Eat Pizza with a Thyroid Disorder, Under One Condition

Many thyroid patients struggle staying healthy because they find eating “clean” to be difficult.  The two most common foods patients miss, and cheat on, are dairy and wheat.

I understand completely, as I grew up in South Carolina drinking a huge glass of milk with every meal (2-3x a day) and I love PIZZA!

After realizing I was lactose intolerant and that wheat caused me joint pain, I gave up a lot of foods I loved.  But, I miss PIZZA!

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)

In my studies, I learned and saw research that the wheat in Italy is ok to eat if you have a gluten allergy/reaction.  Why?  Because the wheat is not modified in Italy the way it is modified in the states.

In order to understand GMO (genetically modified organisms), let me tell you about Monsanto and Roundup.

Supply and demand for crops has brought in companies, like Monsanto and Dow Chemical, to spread poisons, like Roundup and Enlist.  Now, the good before the bad.

It is quite true that because of these companies, billions have been provided food that might otherwise have starved.  Keep in mind, supply and demand.

So why are these poisons so bad?  Herbicides kill weeds, allowing a crop plant to grow without having to compete for water and nutrients with other plant (weed) species.  Insecticides prevent invasive insects (pests) from destroying the crops, yielding a greater return.

Enter the genetically modified organisms!  GMOs were created by inserting foreign genes into plants, with the goal of making the plant produce more of its own, natural, insecticides or produce resistance to Roundup.  The theory was that Roundup would be used to kill weeds that surrounded the GMO plant, thus allowing the GMO plant to grow and survive.  This seemed logical at the time.

However, there were no long-term studies that showed the effect of these poisons on the human body, only short term studies that “showed” the poisons were safe.  The FDA allowed Monsanto to sell Roundup.

Why is there an issue with GMOs?

GMO plants produce proteins and/or lectins that our immune system recognizes as foreign, causing inflammation when we eat them.  Inflammation is the true destroyer.  Essentially, we are eating foods that come from plants that our body doesn’t recognize as food anymore = inflammation.

These different biocides have introduced powerful poisons into our systems from the food we eat, even the produce we touch, and sadly, the animals that produce or meats.  The Roundup, glycophosphate, remains on the foods we eat, and the grains/beans that are fed to livestock in feed lots, pushing the poisons into the animals’ fat, meat and milk.  Almost all grains/beans fed to livestock are GMOs.

The altered genes have not only been found in the animals’ meat, but also in the nursing mothers and the umbilical cord blood of their infants.

On top of that, the Roundup is also used to harvest almost all non-GMO grains and beans as well.  Meaning, you consume the Roundup directly from eating your “healthy foods”.

This is why in the United States a majority of wheat and plants are considered GMO.

Not in Italy

In Italy, Monsanto was not allowed to infest their grain pool.  Thus, the wheat in Italy has not been modified, and if you eat it, your body recognizes it as real food still, and inflammation does not occur!!!

So, you can go to Italy and eat all the pasta you want without having any gluten reactions!  How freaking cool is that.

It gets even better!!!

The breed of cows in Europe is different from what we have here in the United States.

According to Dr. Steven Gundry, MD, about 2,000 years ago a spontaneous mutation occurred in Northern European cows, causing them to make the protein casein A-1 in their milk instead of the normal casein A-2.

During digestion, the casein A-1 turns into a lectin-like protein (keep in mind, gluten is a lectin), called beta-casomorphin, and attaches to the pancreas’s insulin-producing cells prompting an immune attack on the pancreas.  For those consuming milk or cheeses from these cows, this is considered one of the causes of Type 1 Diabetes.

Southern European cows continue to produce A-2, but since A-1 cows are hardier and produce more milk, farmers prefer them over the A-2 cows.  The most common breed of cow worldwide is the Holstein, whose milk contains this A-1 casein.

In Italy, the A-2 producing cows, known as Guernsey, along with Brown Swiss and Belgian Blues, are predominantly used for milk and cheese.

This is why those that can’t break down the A-1 casein protein can still eat cheese or drink milk from Italy (or Switzerland and Belgian).

Neapolitan Certified Pizza

Neapolitan pizza, or pizza Napoletana, is a type of pizza that originated in Naples, Italy.  Neapolitan pizza is prepared with simple and fresh ingredients: basic dough, raw tomatoes, fresh mozzarella cheese, fresh basil, and olive oil.

The Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana (VPN) was founded in 1984 in Naples, Italy to certify pizzerias that use the proper ancient artisan traditions of authentic Neapolitan pizza.  They have several requirements that must be met to gain certification, which must be applied for by a restaurant.

Part of those requirements involve the type of ingredients we have been discussing (Italian flour and A-2 dairy).  This is why if you visit a Neapolitan Certified Pizzeria, and you have a dairy/gluten allergy, you may still be able to enjoy the pizza.

Neapolitan style pizzerias are now popping up in more and more places.  However, make sure, make sure, make sure, they are Neapolitan certified.  Look for the sign below to be rest-assured that your pizzeria is certified…

Now, go and enjoy some pizza!!!

Do You Need Your Thyroid Gland Removed?

At least once a week, a patient contacts me asking, “Dr. King, should I have my thyroid gland removed?”  To which I answer, “that depends”.

The first question I ask is, “why did you doctor say you need to have your thyroid gland removed?”  Some common responses are the following:

  • I don’t know. They just said I should have it taken out since the doctor can’t get my health condition under control
  • I have cancer
  • I have nodule(s) and they are concerned it/they could be cancerous
  • I have difficulty swallowing/breathing
  • I have Hashimoto’s Disease

I am sure, if you have been told to surgically remove your thyroid, you may have heard one of those comments, or something similar.

The Doctor Can’t Get My Condition Under Control

I am not joking with that statement.  Last week, a patient reached out to me and said, “my doctor can’t get my health condition under control, so they want to remove my thyroid”!

Are you freaking kidding me?  A doctor, who can’t manage a thyroid condition properly, wants to take the organ out!  Why?  The thyroid gland serves a purpose, and with it gone, getting your body working optimally will be quite difficult, especially, in the medical model.

So, the doctor, who has failed to manage this patient properly, simply resorts to removing the organ.  Oh my, my!

I encouraged this patient to ask more questions and get more tests ran.

A big piece of the puzzle for thyroid patients and the traditional medical model is 90% of hypothyroid patients have an autoimmune condition.  It doesn’t matter what medications the doctors give the patient, their health condition will never be under control and managed properly.

Why?  Because thyroid hormones prescribed from the doctor will NOT control the autoimmune condition.  Remember, a pill will not heal the body!

I Have Cancer!

Ok, this is the one reason, I believe, for removing the thyroid gland.  If a patient knows they have thyroid cancer (more than likely, their doctor did a biopsy and discovered a malignant form of cancer), I recommend having the cancer removed (thyroid gland).

What about natural cancer treatments, Dr. King?  Sure, I support those who seek to heal their cancer, naturally.  As long as they have a great doctor that knows what they are doing.  Treating cancer naturally, is quite difficult, as there are numerous steps a patient should be taking to help their body fight the cancer.

What happens after the thyroid gland is gone?  It is quite simply, really.  The patient would need to be on some type of thyroid hormone, forever!

With that being said, my father does NOT have his thyroid gland anymore.  About 10+ years ago, he was diagnosed with 4th stage throat cancer.  During the radiation, his doctors destroyed his thyroid, “accidentally”.

Since we discovered this (which his doctors didn’t even tell him), he has been on natural thyroid support (not medication), and has been doing great.  He is one of the pilots that fights all the big forest fires you see on TV.  Plus, when he is not working, he averages about 150-200 miles, per week, cycling!  Needless to say, he feels pretty dang good.

However, if the patient had an autoimmune condition to begin with, they body will now start attacking other regions of the body.  The thyroid is gone, the immune system can’t attack it anymore, so it will go “looking” for other tissue to target.

Nodules!!!

Many patients are told they have nodules, which should be biopsied.  Do I agree with the biopsy every time?  Not every time.  Why?  Due to the fact that a majority of thyroid patients have Hashimoto’s Disease, the leading cause of nodules.  If the thyroid antibodies are positive, and there are not any red flags for cancer, I don’t encourage a biopsy.  The Hashimoto’s Disease is the culprit in this case!

Let’s discuss what nodules are, and then you can decide if you should have the nodule(s) biopsied.

Many times, thyroid nodules begin growing as a protective mechanism by the body to prevent the thyroid gland from being destroyed!  Yep, you read that correctly.  Nodules, a majority of the time (there are instances where they are cancerous, more about that in a minute) are your body’s response to an ATTACK!

Your body is trying to preserve its thyroid, and it does so by growing shields on the tissue to prevent destruction from infections and autoimmune attacks.  Does this mean, if your infection gets eradicated or your autoimmune condition gets under control, nodules will stop growing?  In a lot of instances, yes.

(My mother’s doctor discovered nodules on her thyroid during a full body scan, the kind that can “find disease”, and the doctor told her she had cancer and needed to see an oncologist.  Needless to say, my mother was distraught when she phoned me.  After helping to calm her down, I ordered some blood work, AND…she was perfectly fine.  The nodules were from an old infection, not cancer!  Thanks doctors for freaking my family out!)

I tell patients that a “win” in my book is if the nodule does not grow any larger in size.  This means, the body sees no reason to keep growing a larger shield, because the attacks have halted.  Hooray!!!

I have seen nodules shrink, and even, completely, disappear!  This doesn’t happen with every patient, and I never tell a patient I am going to shrink their nodule.

I use a liposomal glutathione/super oxide dismutase cream to help accomplish the goal of shrinking the nodule.  Again, this doesn’t happen on every patient, but I have seen a few hundred patients respond remarkably well with this product.

I Have Difficulty Swallowing/Breathing

Now, we need to consider what is really happening in a patient like this.  If we know the patient has Hashimoto’s Disease, I always recommend getting it under control, first.

If there are any infections, then those need to be eradicated, as well.

I will do everything I can to get inflammation down within the first 2-weeks of working with a patient that is having difficulties swallowing/breathing.  If there are not any positive changes within 2-weeks, I refer this patient to their endocrinologist for surgical intervention.

Sometimes, surgery is needed!

Why did I not refer them out, right away?  If we can save this type of patient from having an unneeded surgery, that is the goal.  Surgery, should always be the last resort, in my eyes (I have had 35 major broken bones and 11 surgeries…I understand the pros and cons of surgery, well).

I Have Hashimoto’s Disease!

No, no, no, no, no!!!  I do NOT recommend having your thyroid gland removed because you have Hashimoto’s Disease.  You should understand the mechanism of nodules now (read above if you are still unclear).  If you understand what causes them, you can focus on how to get them to stop growing, or even decrease in size.

I am a firm believer that you figure out what is driving the autoimmune condition, and then the side effects of the condition will go shrink, go away, or not grow in the first place.

Take Action!

Stress Can Kill You!

Did you know that stress can kill us, literally?  Well, maybe I am taking that a bit far, but stress causes inflammation to increase inside of the body, and that inflammation affects the gut lining, brain tissue, arteries, the heart, muscles and joints.

Now, let me re-word what I said.  Stress can be the trigger for what causes our bodies to begin breaking down, prematurely.  What does that mean?  Eventually, the body can have a heart attack, develop a chronic health condition (autoimmune disease), or develop cancer.

That Dang Stress

One thing almost all patients tell me is this, “Dr. King, I have had a very stressful life!” It doesn’t matter if you have Hashimoto’s Disease, Diabetes, Multiple Sclerosis, or just feel worn out…stress will make these health conditions worse.

We can’t avoid stress, that would be impossible.  So, what do we do?

You need to eliminate any physiological stressors that could be causing your stress glands, the adrenals, to overwork.

Like what, Dr. King?

Here is a short list of what triggers I look for that drive the adrenal glands to kick out more inflammatory hormones:

  • Blood sugar fluctuations
  • Infections
  • Lack of sleep
  • Dehydration
  • Food sensitivities
  • Autoimmune conditions

If those are occurring, the body will not heal, AND…your body will be under more stress causing more inflammatory hormones to be released.

How Do You Know How Well the Adrenals Are Working?

There can be a few ways of knowing if the adrenals are not working properly:

  • Adrenal Stress Index test – this test measures your cortisol levels and maps them out throughout the day
  • Basic blood tests
  • Simple questions on intake forms

Also, if you can’t stay asleep, it is a good bet that the adrenal glands are not working properly throughout the day.

Check this out…

Have you, or someone you known, complained of getting up in the middle of the night to urinate?

Do you think that is normal?  Not at all (unless you have a majorly inflamed prostate gland).  So, why does this happen and what does urinating have to do with the adrenal glands?

During the day, if the adrenal glands are always pumping out cortisol, then at night the “proper levels” of cortisol can’t be secreted.  This makes the body revert to the backup hormones, with adrenaline being one of those hormones.

Now, imagine you are on a safari, in Africa (pretty cool, eh).  And you are lounging around your tent and all of a sudden, a HUGE, ferocious lion approaches you.

What does your body do?  The heart starts to pump more blood to help the muscles get ready to run away, you get that “feeling” in the pit of your stomach (adrenaline), and you may have the urge to urinate.  Why urinate?  Because your body will do anything it can to get you the heck out there, and it doesn’t need the urine in your bladder to run.  So, it will want to get rid of it.

Adrenaline at Night

If you get a spike of adrenaline at night, similar physiological functions kick in:

  • Nervous system gets activated (like when the lion approached) – you wake up
  • Your heart can be racing – patients tell me that sometimes they feel as if their heart is pounding and that is why they are waking up
  • You will need to urinate

Long way to prove a point, but…hopefully, you now know that if you wake up to urinate at night, the adrenal glands need to be looked at.

Gaining Weight

A lot of people know that if the adrenal glands are not working well, they gain weight.

Cortisol = Weight Gain

This can be an accumulation of adipose tissue (fat) or water weight.  Either way, when people are under more stress, you typically see weight gain (I assuming that over-eating is not a problem).

80% of the Immune System

Ok, what does urinating at night and gaining weight have to do with breaking down the body?

I am glad you asked!!!

High amounts of cortisol will eat away at the gastrointestinal lining, causing Leaky Gut Syndrome (LGS). A healthy GI system is EXTREMELY important for a healthy immune system (the GI tract makes up for 80% of the immune system).

If your GI lining is breaking down, then the immune system becomes weaker and weaker.

On top of that, now the LGS is causing major inflammation in the blood, and the heart has to pump this “bad” blood (breaking the heart tissue down, along with the arteries).

Not the Brain!

We, also, know cortisol in excessive amounts will pass your blood brain barrier. You have a barrier that surrounds the brain protecting it from large foreign particles. Alcohol, medications, and hormones are some of the chemicals that will pass the blood brain barrier.

You know what happens when alcohol passes the barrier! When cortisol passes the barrier, it destroys neurons! Specifically, it targets the hippocampus, which when destroyed will cause dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease (I watched my grandfather struggle with this the last five years of his life due in part to Type II Diabetes).

Now, you have the heart, arteries, gut lining, and brain, all breaking down!  On top of that, you may be gaining weight, have horrible GI symptoms, brain fog, and your hormones are thrown off.

All because of stress and your body’s ability to handle it (or, not handle it).

Infections: Triggers that drive an Autoimmune Condition

Patients ask me a lot, “Dr. King, what causes an autoimmune condition?”  While that question is not easily answered, I will say that infections are triggers, or driving forces behind autoimmune conditions.

Here is a short video of me explaining infections...

Gluten Free Spinach/Quinoa Cakes

Are you tired of eating the same old snacks, day in and day out.  Well…me, too!  Today, I came up with a new twist on my spinach/quinoa cakes.  Plus, they are gluten, dairy and soy free (I don’t count eggs as dairy).

Here is how I made them:

Spinach cake: https://drpraegers.com/our-food/spinach-cakes/
Quinoa cake: http://qrunchfoods.com/
1 Avocado
1 Red onion – thinly sliced (1 slice per “cake”)
2 Pastured eggs
Vinegar

Bake your spinach/quinoa cakes in a toaster oven (or, the “big” oven). While this is warming up, slice a few pieces of your red onion (I place these directly on the cake), your avocado (placed on the onions), and begin heating your water to poach your egg.

I put a TBSP of vinegar in the boiling water and then crack open my eggs and drop into the boiling water.

Once your cakes are warm enough, and your eggs are done…layer your cake with the onion, avocado, and eggs.

I use cracked black pepper and pink salt on top of the egg!

I hope you enjoy!

Vegan to Pescatarian

For those of you who have been following my Facebook posts on Ask Dr. King, you know that about 2-months ago, Natasha and I, decided to eat like some of our Vegan friends.

Results?  We both felt AMAZING!  Downfall?  We both started losing hair, and lots of it.

Why the hair loss?  I firmly believe it was due to a lack of good fats, even though we were both taking EFAs.  So, we switched brands, which gave us a lot more good fats, while we added fish back into our eating lifestyle.

The crazy thing, neither one of us miss eating beef, bison, turkey or chicken…BUT, we really, really, really missed eating fish.  So, we are now Pescatarian!

Sunday night, Natasha’s mother came over for dinner (which she has Hashimoto’s Disease, Crohn’s Disease, and suffers from Stubbornness Disease) and we always try to feed her super healthy food because she will not do it herself.  So, we decided to have some of our favorite fish on the grill: trout and branzino!!!

For those that are unfamiliar with cooking fish, it is extremely easy to do (as long as you get the fish gutted from the market).

Here is how we prepared our dinner:

2 Trout and 1 Branzino…

  • Tons of olive oil inside/outside of the skin of the fish
  • Stuffed the fish with basil, rosemary, Thai basil, cilantro and sliced lemon.
  • Lots of Pink Salt and black pepper on the skin.

We cooked the fish on the grill, bringing the grill to almost 600 degrees. Make sure, make sure you coat the grill with a LOT of olive oil.

We cooked the trout for 4-minutes on each side, and the branzino for 6-minutes on each side.

Easy peasy!

We served with cauliflower mashed potatoes and asparagus.

Is Eating Vegan Bad?

I don’t think so, at all.  As long as you can get adequate amounts of protein, EFAs/Omegas, and B Vitamins in you, you should be just fine.  Variety can be tough, and sometimes eating the same foods becomes rather monotonous.  However, the benefits of eating plant based were noticeable for me within the first 2-weeks.

I had been off my bike (for those that don’t know, I am a huge cycling enthusiast: road, mountain…anything with two wheels) for almost 6-months.  If any of you are cyclists, you know your cycling fitness goes down dramatically within a time frame such as 6-months, heck…even two weeks!

I started eating Vegan at the same time I was getting back to cycling.  OMGoodness…my fitness levels were coming back VERY, VERY quickly.  I recovered faster, even on the bike.  What that means is when you are pushing yourself to the max, you can only do that for so long (30-45 seconds for some, and 1-5 minutes for others) before you must drop back in the group and recover before pushing again.

I noticed that I was able to recover a lot faster than I did in the past, and then was able to move back to the front of the group and “do work”.  This is very much welcomed.  Even the cyclists that saw me on my first couple of group rides started to take notice.

My breathing cleared up, as I have always been congested on one side of my nose!  I would like to say I got better looking…LOLOL…but, that would be wishful thinking.  I did lose a couple of pounds, but that was to be expected.  Eating vegetables was actually a lot of fun.  We had to learn how to prepare them in different ways; i.e. cooking squash and zucchini using the Vegetable Spiralizer vs. grilling them.  I swear, cooking vegetables on the grill vs. on the stove, vs. baking them, will change the way you perceive that vegetable.

We jumped on Google and researched different recipes to help us during the 30 (50)-day challenge.

Feeling Tired

There were days where I would feel tired and run down.  However, those were also the days I was not good about taking my B-vitamins!!!  Make sure, make sure, make sure…that you are getting enough B vitamins and EFAs/Omegas if you decide to eat Vegan.

I firmly believe we could have kept eating that way, if it wasn’t for ME freaking out about losing hair.  I have NEVER had a hair loss problem, and no one in my family has either.  So, that was scaring the crap out of me.  We recently added in the fish, and I will provide an update in a couple weeks after our hair has stopped falling out! HA

There ya have it…my take on being Vegan.

Dr. King’s 1st Webinar…Are You Ready?

The date is quickly approaching: Thursday, 24th at 7:00 PM Central.

Topics to be discussed:

  • Why eating “clean” is important to healing and surviving!
  • Can a person overcome (heal) their autoimmune condition by changing their foods?
  • How can I explain my lifestyle changes to my doctors without them thinking I am crazy?
  • I am on a gluten free diet.  Is there any harm in having my “healthy” children eating the same way?
  • What are the top 3-5 supplements we all should take to continue to ‘thrive and survive’?

Here is the cool part, the webinar will be on Facebook’s Livestream!  Why?  It is probably the easiest platform to use, for everyone.  Plus, most people all have Facebook accounts (if not, the webinar will be worth setting up an account 🙂  ).

How to Watch!

Super simple…just  Click Here  and you will be taken to my Fan Page, Ask Dr. King.  The video should be at the top of your screen (some people may have to scroll down just a little bit).

Now the fun part!  You can ask me live questions during the event.  If you can’t catch the live event, the videos will be saved for watching later…PLUS, you can even ask me questiond after the event when you are watching the saved video.

Pretty snazzy!

If you are not on my email list (which I send out reminders, recipes, etc.), notify me so you don’t miss out on all the great educational materials I have been pumping out.

I look forward to speaking with those attendees on Thursday night!

Food Sensitivities, Lifestyle Changes and Children Eating Healthy!

Earlier this week, I sent an email asking everyone to send in questions they would like me to cover on my first webinar.  I had an overwhelming response to that email, to the point I believe we will have a couple of webinars based off the questions that came in, ranging from: food sensitivities, lifestyle changes and children eating healthy.

It can be difficult for me to come up with topics that YOU may want to hear, or read about.  So, thank you for submitting your questions.

I Want to Answer Some Questions Now!

Question:  Can a person overcome autoimmune illness WITHOUT changing their diet?

Answer: I highly doubt it!  I will go as far as saying, absolutely NO WAY!  I will elaborate:

Autoimmune conditions are triggered, or turned on, for several reasons, and one of them is food sensitivities.   Through science, we know that certain foods have molecular structures that are similar to organ tissue.  A great example of this is thyroid tissue and gluten.  The molecular structure of gluten is very similar to thyroid tissue.  Autoimmune thyroid (Hashimoto’s Disease) patients will react to gluten, and when this happens, the body not only goes after destroying the gluten substance in the body, but the immune system also attacks the thyroid gland.

Some doctors call it mimicry, and it happens with other foods that are considered cross-reactive (i.e. rice, buckwheat, and quinoa, to name a few).

Question:  Can autoimmune conditions be managed without healing the gut?

Answer: Again, I highly doubt it.  Why?  80% of the immune system is located in the gastro-intestinal tract.  Once this gets broken down, autoimmune conditions, even cancer, can turn on.  If the GI lining is broken down, you must heal the lining in order for the immune system to stop attacking the body.

Keep in mind, in order to heal the GI lining, you must stop poisoning it.

“But Dr. King, I don’t drink poison!”  Cool, but foods and medications can be poison as well.

Almost everyone knows that antibiotics can destroy the stomach and the gut.  Too much Mortin will eat a hole into the stomach.  If you break down the stomach and gut lining, your body WILL NOT heal.

Question: How long do I have to stay away from inflammatory foods?

Answer:  I will be very honest, I have NEVER understood this question.  If you understand that inflammatory foods break the body down and cause inflammation, WHY would you want to add those foods back in?

I know, I know…because those foods taste good and they are easy to cook/buy.  But my goodness, why put poison back into your body that contributed to destroying the body in the first place?

I compare it to alcoholics (my uncle was an alcoholic and drank himself into a brain aneurysm, so this hits close to home).  Imagine this: an alcoholic destroys their liver to the point they need a new liver, and they are LUCKY enough to somehow get a liver transplant because they sobered up…but, they went back to drinking with the new liver.  Tis Tis!

You can probably see the correlation.

Diet = D.I.E.

No one sticks to diets, and I hate using that word.  I like to tell patients to focus on their lifestyle.  If you begin to change your habits, those habits will turn into long term changes within you.

Here is one example: Our culture seems preoccupied with instantaneous results.  For example, we can jump on the internet and find answers to most questions, without ever picking up a book and reading.  AND…this can be done on a phone!

Patience is a Virtue…and Not Many of us Have it!

Healing takes time!  The body didn’t break down over night, or over a period of a month, so don’t expect it to heal in that time frame.

Crazy story…I spoke with a patient today, and I asked her questions about her health history, and she tells me that she had been asking her doctor to look deeper into her thyroid condition for almost 10 YEARS!!!!  She had been struggling with weight loss for 10-years and she had a feeling her thyroid played a role.  Guess what?  She was right!  She has Hashimoto’s Disease.

Not only that, but when she was 21-years old, she had a partial hysterectomy due to cancer!  She is now in her mid-30’s, and I am going to help heal her body from damage that was created when she was in her teenage years!  Unbelievable!

The body doesn’t heal overnight!

Question: Is it problematic to put my healthy children on a gluten free diet?

Answer: I am not trying to be a smart-butt with this answer, but I don’t let my French Bulldogs eat gluten!  Heck, I could eat their dog food, it is that healthy.

Gluten, in our country, is genetically modified to the point that our body does not recognize it as normal “food” anymore, but a foreign invader.

Wheat has been hybridized (genetically modified) to keep pests/insects from destroying the crop, to produce a greater yield, due to supply and demand.  The herbicides and pesticides that are used on the wheat crops, to also help protect the crop, are toxic to our body.  Now imagine giving toxins to young children, who are still growing and developing.  How about just a little tiny amount, the size of a pen point?  No, not even the tiniest amount?  If you are letting your child eat wheat in the states, you are essentially doing this.

Remember, I grew up in the country and was surrounded by farmers’ fields…I know what goes on.  Heck, my father was a crop duster for years before he was in the military!  He was contributing to our very demise!

White Bread vs. Others…

I will make a deal with you, I can live with your children eating WHITE bread, not SPROUTED or 100% WHOLE GRAIN, as long as the bread’s expiration date is the same as it’s manufactured date.

I will say that a different way.  Your child can eat bread if it was cooked that same day, make sure it is sourdough.  Why?  Because of the process fresh bread goes through.  The rising, fermentation, of the bread helps to break down lectins in the wheat (what people react to), along with bacteria.  You will find certain bakeries open at 4:00 AM, preparing their day’s bread.  Once they are out, they are out.  Heck, some bakeries will not sell you day old bread because it is already spoiling.

Now that is some good bread.

Would I prefer your children stay away from bread all together?  Yes.  I would much rather you guys go to Italy and pig out on all the bread, croissants and pies (pizza) that you want.  Why?  Their wheat is substantially different than our wheat (healthier, and I know this first hand).

Hungry, yet?

Where does this leave us…well…. hopefully, with a little more clarity than before.  However, I will go into more depth with these same questions on our webinar.

Don’t worry, I will send out links next week for the webinar, but it will be on Thursday evening at 7:00 Central (and it will be recorded for those that can’t make the live event).

25 spots available

For my first webinar, it is limited to 25 attendees!  Why, because these dang webinar companies charge an arm and a leg to host these gigs.  With that being said, if I have a huge demand, I will increase the number of attendees (more cost for me, free to you J).

For right now, it is open to the first 25 people to log on.  DON’T WORRY…I will send out more information next week.  The benefit of being on the webinar, you will be able to submit LIVE questions!

Keep an eye on your inbox early next week for the information on how to log on, LIVE, to…

Cooking Okra, A New Way!

Growing up visiting my grandparents in Mississippi, they ALWAYS cooked a ton of vegetables!  I am talking, a massive amount.  My grandfather grew his own vegetables ranging from butter beans, corn, tomatoes, okra, squash, peppers, eggplant, etc.

I remember sitting with a big stainless-steel bowl, helping my grandmother shuck butter beans while we watched the Atlanta Braves play baseball.

Although I loved eating vegetables, the one vegetable I would NOT eat, was okra…unless, it was fried!  Mmmmmm…fried okra!  I could eat an entire bowl like it was popcorn.

My grandparents liked to boil their okra.  To me, that was like eating snot!  YUCK!  Fried = little pieces of heaven.

Baked/Broiled

The other day Natasha and I were walking through the grocery store and saw a container full of organic okra.  So, we decided to find a new way to prepare the okra (we aren’t frying our food anymore).

The fun aspect of eating lots of vegetables is preparing them in new/different ways.  Our “ah ha” moment…we would split them in half, bake them, and then broil for a few moments to give them that toasted/fried taste.

After a quick wash, splitting them down the middle (Natasha likes the stems left on, but not I), sprinkling with olive oil/pink salt/black pepper…they were thrown in the oven.

Roughly 15-20 minutes later, we had some amazing tasting okra.  I really liked the dichotomy of the crunchiness combined with the “sliminess”.

Give it a go, and let me know what you think!  The following pictures are the other veggies we prepared to go with the okra: yellow squash, spaghetti squash, and portabella mushrooms/onions.

Type II Diabetes is COMPLETELY Reversible

I write a lot about thyroid gland disorders, but I have been getting more and more patients requesting help who are suffering from Type II Diabetes.  Did YOU know that Type II Diabetes is reversible?  I mean, completely reversible!!!

How freaking cool is that!?  Why?  Because, if you reverse diabetes, or at least get it under control, you can help to prevent Alzheimer’s Disease!

Statistics are showing that Alzheimer’s Disease is on the rise, to the point that it will be right up there with cardiovascular disease and cancer in the next 20 years.

The sad part is that many doctors do NOT know how to “prevent” or “treat” Alzheimer’s Disease.

Finally, the medical model has publicly made a correlation between Alzheimer’s Disease and Diabetes: Alzheimer’s Disease is being called Type III Diabetes!

Blood Sugar is Key!

Check this out, and this may surprise MANY of you…

Question:

Besides insulin and other diabetic medications, what else do most diabetics get prescribed?

Answer:

Statins

Why?

Most diabetics have high cholesterol.  What do most medical doctors do when a patient has high cholesterol?  They put them on a statin.

Statins lower cholesterol.  They do!  However, but they also lower the good cholesterol: HDLs.  Cholesterol, in general, makes up the membranes (walls) of your neurons (brain cells).  What happens if you lower cholesterol (some doctors are now wanting it below 150!!!)?  You start to degrade the neuronal membranes = neurons die off = pre-disposes the patient to memory loss, dementia, and Alzheimer’s Disease!!!

HOLY CRAP, BATMAN!!!

Read that paragraph again, please!  What I just told you is the cause of a TON of brain dysfunction in many, many, many diabetics.

Don’t get me wrong, not all diabetics develop Alzheimer’s Disease.  Not all diabetics get put on statins, but A LOT do!

You may be thinking, “the medical doctors, they…they, want us sick!!!”  I will let you be the judge of that one, as that gets into a big philosophical debate.

Controlling Blood Sugar

Many patients learn they are diabetic, or pre-diabetic, and try to control it through food.  Sometimes that works, but in a majority of the cases, the insulin receptors are fighting against them.

Visualize a blue circle, and on this blue circle are two little doors that are open.  Those doors represent what are called insulin receptors.  Most of you have heard of insulin, for those that have not, insulin is what carries glucose into the cell (in this case, the blue circle) to produce energy and keep you alive.

As long as insulin can carry glucose into the cell, everything is working great.  However, if those doors (insulin receptors) begin to shut, the insulin can’t get in.  Therefore, the glucose can’t get in!  This can happen for a variety of reasons, but the number one reason: eating infrequently and then bombarding the receptors with a TON of glucose and insulin at once when you scarf down that huge meal at Applebees!

When this happens, the body will convert your insulin to triglycerides!!!  This process, by itself is extremely inflammatory.  Now, if the insulin can’t get into your cells, your triglycerides begin to show high on a blood test, and along with triglycerides, your glucose will begin to show high on the blood test.

Sooner or later, your doctor diagnoses you with Type II Diabetes and prescribes you insulin/metformin/etc.

Welcome to PILL WORLD!

Open the Dang Doors, Please !

Ok, so you want to know how to open the insulin receptor sites again?  I use the following herbs:

  • Alpha Lipoid Acid
  • Choline
  • Fu-Ling Extract
  • L-Carnitine
  • Iositol
  • PABA
  • Vanadium
  • N- Acetyle L-Cysteine
  • Gymnema Extract

Along with vitamin E, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, biotin, pantothenic acid, magnesium, zinc, selenium, manganese and chromium, and some other goodies that if I told you what they were, I would have to…just kidding…but, there are many other herbs I use.

Don’t worry, these are all rolled into ONE pill.

I play with the dosages to determine what is working well for the patient, and eventually titrate down on the amounts I am using.

Some patients may stay on a small dosage, and some patients are able to completely come off of them all together, once their blood tests stabilize.

Let’s Prevent Diabetes, First!

Here is a secret…I would much rather help someone prevent diabetes, then help them reverse diabetes!  Why?  It is easier!!!  Preventing diabetes costs less money and creates less damage to the body.

Did you know that in males, erectile dysfunction is very common to see with diabetes?  Along with kidney failure and loss of vision, in both sexes.

Diabetes destroys and destroys, BIG TIME!  Let’s prevent the destruction before it begins.

Ok, are you ready for the “secret” to prevent diabetes?  Are you sure?

Eat a healthy and balanced “diet” (I really hate the word diet, anyhoo…)!  Eat smaller meals throughout during the day.  Limit your carbs (unless you are burning them off through exercise), increase your veggies, decrease the amount of red meat you consume, and drink plenty of water!

I know, it sounds too easy.  However, many, many Americans eat horribly!  If people would clean up their eating, we would have a lot less chronically sick patients in this country.

If you have been following my Facebook posts (make sure you are following Ask Dr. King on Facebook), you know that Natasha and I recently started a 30-Day Vegan Challenge.

Don’t worry…I will not make you eat like a rabbit, if you don’t want to.  But, I can tell you…I feel great!  Several of you know that I am cycling fanatic.  I have been racing mountain bikes, road bikes, and triathlon for many years…and several of you have seen the injuries that accompany those fun activities (cough cough).

Anyhoo…since starting my Vegan challenge, my performance on the bike has sky rocketed.  I can recover quicker on the bike (if you are a cyclist, you know what I mean by that), and my sore muscles the next day are almost non-existent.

For example, yesterday, in the Texas heat, I cycled for 4-hours, climbing for almost 4,000 ft.  Today, I didn’t even notice I rode yesterday my body felt so good.

Is that due to eating more plants?  Personally, I think so.  I feel I am not as inflamed due to cutting out meats.

We did celebrate our 30-Day Challenge by having some wild caught Halibut this past weekend.  And get this, Natasha had a very difficult time consuming the fish (not me, HA).  She actually looked forward to getting back on the vegan “diet”.

One thing with vegans, vegetarians, and all the other crazy “diets” lack, quality B vitamins and/or essential fatty acids.  We have found that by adding those in, eating this way, we are not missing a beet (did you catch the joke?  Beet!  Corny…yeah yeah).

Spread the Word!

If you know of someone that is struggling with diabetes, and they are DETERMINED to clean up their lifestyle and re-gain their health, have them call me: (866) Drking-1.

WARNING: not many diabetics are willing to do what it takes to heal.  Someone must be committed to get this condition under control, as lifestyle, sometimes drastic, are required.

I spoke to two new diabetics today!  They are extremely excited about getting this condition under control, because they are both care takers for a parent, who is struggling with their health.  After taking care of their parents, these patients are bound and determined to be as independent as possible!

Do you think being hooked up to a dialysis machine takes away your independence?  You better believe it!  What about losing your vision to diabetes?  Or, how about losing a limb from an amputation (yes, I have worked with those patients before)?

So, with that being said…let’s make today be a new day…focused on your health…and let’s kick some behind!

Call me, (866) Drking-1, and I will help you get on the right track.

If, Dr. Axe, Says Healing Leaky Gut Syndrome Is True, It Must Be True!

(Laughing hysterically)

Just last week, a spoke to a future patient that told me, “Dr. King, I listened to Dr. Axe talking about healing Leaky Gut Syndrome (LGS) for Hashimoto’s Disease, and I never believed you about the gut needing healing until I listened to him!”

I am not sure how long Dr. Axe has been around, but recently his marketing has taken him to another level (which is great, as more people are going to get helped), but I have been preaching to patients for almost 10-years about healing the gut.

Your Gut = Your Immune System

80% of your immune system is dependent upon a healthy functioning gut.  Once the gut lining breaks down, all HECK can break lose, and most of the time this leads to an autoimmune condition, such as Hashimoto’s Disease, turning on.  Think about this for a moment, if you have an autoimmune condition, your gut lining has been compromised.  Don’t you think it would be important to heal the Leaky Gut Syndrome?

Why would Leaky Gut Syndrome Begin?

  1. Food allergens: this is one of the most common reasons why people’s gut lining breaks down, causing Leaky Gut Syndrome/Intestinal Permeability. Gluten, Dairy and Soy, are all inflammatory foods that begin to destroy the gut lining.  Do you think you can handle some eye-popping food information?  Watch What the Health! and What’s With Wheat!
  2. Excess cortisol: many people have heard of cortisol before because it stores belly fat. Did you know that too much cortisol causes inflammation, affecting your gut lining, along with causing BRAIN FOG!  That is right, your brain fog could be caused by too much cortisol, that has caused Leaky Gut Syndrome.
  3. Medications: yes, antibiotics will destroy the good gut flora.  I recently received an email from a potential patient that had been on multiple rounds of antibiotics, for a straight 10-months!
  4. Pregnancy: did you know that during your third trimester, your immune system switches dominance (TH1 to Th2 and vice versa)? What this means to you is that sometimes you will develop an autoimmune disease due to pregnancy.
  5. Adrenal gland stress: the adrenal glands release cortisol, normally, to help stabilize your glucose levels throughout the day/night. Your adrenal glands are also your STRESS GLANDS!  Emotional stress, such as moving, changing/losing your job, divorce/death in the family are some of the biggest emotional stressors we will ever experience.

Most of the time, we get hit by multiple stressors at once, and we have seen after these stressors, an autoimmune condition turns on.

This is exactly what happened to my better-half, Natasha, recently.  Her mother has Hashimoto’s Disease, along with her sister, but for the last 6-years Natasha’s                antibodies have been negative.

Well, along with us moving to Texas, the black mold in our home in California, and a number of other “speed bumps” we have encountered since our move,                          Natasha’s antibodies turned positive = Hashimoto’s Disease.

How Do You Heal Leaky Gut Syndrome?

Many people and gurus are now creating their own LGS healing products.  I am sure they are great, but my favorite Leaky Gut healing product is from Apex Energetics, called Repairvite.  Why?  Research!  I have seen the research behind all of their formulations and know the quality control those products go through, and even the formulators of the products.

Now, no two patients are the same, and there are different variations of gut dysfunction and gut repairing products.

If you have ever been diagnosed with SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) then taking “regular” Repairvite would make you worse!  There are certain properties in Repairvite that can cause more irritation and inflammation.  This is why working with a doctor that understands the ends and outs of Leaky Gut healing is beneficial.

Yes, some people will be helped by the products they are buying online, but the patients who have been suffering for years, bouncing back and forth between doctor after doctor, needs someone who can walk them through the steps of healing the GI-lining, without causing more aggravation.

90-120 Days!

Normally, healing the GI-lining takes 90-120 days!  That is ONLY 3-4 months!  It took me almost 2-years to do the same thing.  Why?  When I discovered I had Leaky Gut Syndrome/Intestinal Permeability (LGS/IP), not many people knew about it or understood how to heal it.

I made it my mission to figure out how to heal my gut!  I did, but…it took right at 2-years to do.  Now, I have it down to roughly 90-120 days.  Pretty cool, huh?

Infections

Yes, infections can cause Leaky Gut Syndrome.  I like to call them, “critters”!  If you have critters, they will eat away at your gut lining, creating inflammation, causing LGS/IP.  The critters must go!

Quick story, a patient emailed me last week and told me “I have TAPEWORMS”!!!  Needless to say, she was freaking out a little bit.  I sent her some of my favorite critter killers and today she emailed me saying “there is a massacre” going on inside of her body!  LOL

She was being a little funny and animated, but what she was trying to explain was the critter killers doing their job = killing off the bad guys (not the good guys, which is important to know).

Lots of times, parasitic infections are a big deal.  Parasites like to feed on yeast.  So, adopting a low sugar diet, along with killing off the food for the critters is essential.

OMG…I don’t Want Critters!

How can you know if you have them or not?  Through specialized testing, which I run on every single patient.  Easy Peasy!

If they are there, we will kill them off, re-check the labs and make sure they are gone, and keep healing the GI-lining.

Let’s Recap

In summary, to begin healing the gut lining, you want to look at stressors:

  • blood sugar
  • emotional/chemical/physical stressors
  • past history of lifestyle
  • infections
  • food allergens

Then, you want to focus on staying away from any triggers that create this inflammation.

Next, you want to begin patching up the gut lining!  Make sure you are getting products from someone that knows specifics about YOUR health condition.  Guessing about which products to use based an online video can be dangerous and delay your healing.

To get help with all of this, call me: (866) Drking-1.  Let’s get you back to being, YOU!

Healthy, Vegan-Based, Cauliflower Taco Recipe!

Are you looking for a healthy, vegan based, cauliflower taco recipe?  Well, look no further…we made these last night and LOVED them.

They are quite easy to make, and if you prepare enough of the ingredients, you can have them for lunch the next day.  Remember, keep everything simple.  We opted for some frozen veggies here (organic), but the frozen veggies speed up the preparation time.  You could even use organic, frozen cauliflower as well.  We had some fresh cauliflower in the fridge and wanted to use it up.

Ingredients:

1) Siete almond flour tortillas (they were out of the coconut yesterday) – we get them from Whole Foods or Amazon
2) Fresh, organic cauliflower; chopped – we bake the cauliflower with olive oil, pink salt and black pepper until our desired texture
3) Frozen (YEP), organic peas and carrots
4) 2 avocados – mashed with lime juice (fresh) and chopped red onions, sprinkled with pink salt
5) Black beans – we soaked them for 2 days
6) Kabocha squash – chopped in small squares and baked. We use pink salt and black pepper for seasoning
7) Sweet onion- chopped and sauteed

The night before, we did use sauteed zucchini and squash before we tried the kabocha squash.  Get creative with your vegetables.  Buy what is in season and figure out how to prepare them.  You can combine many different vegetables together to make a dish.

We heat our tortillas on the stove by placing them right over the burner (I am sure there are better ways to do this, but we like them a tad crispy).

Simply take all the ingredients above, and fill your taco!!!

It doesn’t matter if you are eating vegan or want to prepare these cauliflower tacos with some meat…either way, I am sure they will be delicious!

We absolutely loved these vegan based, cauliflower tacos.

Eating Plant Based Versus Eating Meat, Have We Been Doing It, Backwards?

Eating plant based versus eating meat…I am going to challenge your beliefs, along with mine.  Are you ready?  I bet half of you will not be able to handle this challenge!

What the Health!

If you have Netflix, watch this documentary.   For those that don’t have Netflix, do the trial period just to watch this eye-opening film.

Shortly after moving to Austin, Texas, I went about one-month eating a plant based diet, plus fish.  I felt amazing!  I never thought eating more of a plant-based diet would change the way I felt.  I thought I felt fine already; I ate clean, didn’t drink alcohol, and exercised like crazy.  But, during that binge on plants and expensive-fresh-caught-fish…I was kicking butt.

Then, I started going back to eating bulk-frozen meats (turkey, bison, and chicken), along with fish thrown in, and little veggies.  Why?  It was easy!  Have you tried eating plant based versus eating meat, it gets tough to change up your meals = boring!

Thanks, Bud!

Then, one of my best-friends suggested I watch, What the Health! “Eating plant based is much healthier than eating meat”, he says!  So, a week or so after the recommendation, I started watching the movie.  Holy crap…what was I hearing?  Crazy!  Then, I stopped the documentary half way through.  Hey, it was 11:30 PM, and went to bed.

The next night, guess what?  I was finished the entire film…with my mouth on the floor and eyes bugging out of my head.

Have what I have been doing, and thought, not to mentioned, preached…could it be, could it be backwards?

My answer…let’s prove what may happen if we eat a plant-based diet, entirely, for ONE month!

Challenge Time!

Do you think you are ready for the challenge?  It is tough, I will not kid you.  It sucks!  Why?  Because, it is freaking hard.

Have you ever overcome a challenge?  Maybe it was a physical challenge?  Some of you may have overcome a relationship challenge, job challenge, or emotional challenge.  Once you overcame that challenge, how did you feel?  Are you ready to feel it again?

I think I need a challenge right now.  I am willing to eat a plant-based diet, for one month.  Are you?

Let’s Do It!

This is what you may need to do: get some online cook books for eating a plant based diet.  You will need some ideas on how to cook that way.  I don’t have enough ideas myself.  Don’t ask me…yet!

The Challenge…

Eat, entirely, a plant-based diet, for a complete month!!!  Do your best not to cheat.  It is hard.  I am almost one full week into it, and all I want is BACON!  But, I haven’t given in.

The day before I Natasha and I started the challenge, we went to Costco and bought all of our organic beef, turkey, and bison.  Now, we have a ton of meat sitting in the freezer.

To make things even tougher, we bought a TON of our special, EXPENSIVE, bacon.  It was already in the refrigerator, so Natasha made an enormous cobb salad for her mom and used up all the bacon so it wouldn’t go to waste.  Hey…someone must eat it.

B Vitamins and Good Fats

If you decide to take me up on this challenge, which I hope you do, you will want to add in a VERY good quality B-complex.  Costco, Walmart, Walgreens…they do NOT have good quality products.  If you have a question about a specific brand, let me know, and I can share what I am taking.

Also, you will want to add in a good quality essential fatty acid.  Again, if you have questions on a specific brand, email me, drking@askdrking.com.

I can tell you, some of the sickest patients I have seen over the years have been vegans/vegetarians.  Not because eating that way is wrong, but because they were not getting the “good” stuff that we do obtain from meats.

Protein…How Do You Get It?

I am using an organic, pea protein powder (2x per day).  Some brands are the following:

  • Sunwarrior – Warrior Blend (Whole Foods, Sprout’s, and Mother’s Market)
  • Vega – this does have rice protein and we are staying away from grains (Whole Foods, Sprout’s, and Mother’s Market)
  • Biotics Research Pea Protein (this is what we are using)
  • Apex Energetics – I carry this one as well, and some of my patients are using this. This pea protein is chalkier in texture compared to Biotics Pea Protein

Beans are an option!

This flies in the face of what I have been taught, studied, and preached…but, I am eating beans to see how I feel.

For a lot of us, they cause gas and bloating (inflammation).  We have been soaking the beans for two days before eating.  So far, not too bad.  If we don’t soak them = gas!!!  Gas is simply inflammation = no Bueno!

Are You Up For the Challenge?

If so, shoot me an email, drking@askdrking.com, and let me know.  That way, we can check to see each other is doing, compare notes (recipes) and see how each other is feeling.

Keep it fun and be creative!

Enjoy!
