If you’re like most Americans, you eat a high-carb breakfast packed with grains, dairy, and sugar, or you don’t eat breakfast at all either because you’re too busy or you want to lose weight. Either way, you’re not doing yourself any favors.

Breakfast is exactly what it sounds like — the breaking of a fast. After 8-plus hours of no food, your body needs fuel to bring its systems up to speed and maintain even energy for the day. As it turns out, eating a solid breakfast is one of the best things you can do to lose weight. It also helps assure a clear mind, steady emotions, and plentiful energy throughout the day.

Skipping breakfast can actually make you gain weight!

We’ve all been taught the “calories in vs. calories out” theory for weight loss. In an effort to cut calories, we skip breakfast because it’s the easiest meal to do without, especially if we tend to wake up with no appetite or we’re always in a rush to get to work. But while calories can matter, skipping breakfast can actually lead to weight gain:

When you wake in the morning, your blood sugar is already low. Skipping breakfast (or any meal) allows it to go lower and impairs insulin sensitivity, which leads to weight gain.

Chronic low blood sugar creates a cascade effect in your hormonal system that directly affects your body’s ability to deal with stress. This can result in increased inflammation throughout your body, which can lead to weight gain. Low blood sugar also causes brain fog, mood issues, insomnia, decreased brain function, and other health issues. None of these symptoms will help you stick to a healthier eating plan.

Skipping breakfast has interesting behavioral effects; research shows that people who skip breakfast tend to reach for higher calorie foods once they do eat, leading to higher total daily calorie consumption than those who ate a solid breakfast. This is partly because missing meals causes the brain to become primed toward higher-calorie foods like it would during starvation or famine.

Skipping breakfast makes you more likely to binge on sugary foods that result in an energy crash later in the day—making you less likely to go out and get that much-needed exercise. (PS: A big sweet, milky coffee drink with whipped cream is not a breakfast.)

Eat a protein-strong breakfast for weight loss and steady energy

You know you need to eat breakfast. But eating traditional carb-heavy breakfast foods such as cereals, bagels, muffins, and fruit smoothies isn’t a great idea; they sabotage your weight loss goals by destabilizing blood glucose and insulin after the night’s fast, as well as kicking cravings for quick-energy sugary stuff and junk foods into high gear.

Eating a nutrient-dense, lower carb breakfast with plenty of protein and healthy fats provides the brain and body with proper fuel, balances your blood sugar and insulin, and gives your metabolism a boost for the day.

Studies show a protein-strong breakfast can also reduce hunger hormones, increase the chemical that tells your brain to stop eating, improve your sense of satiety, and reduce evening snacking.

Are you chronically stressed out, chronically fatigued, or both? Are you careful about your diet and lifestyle but nothing works? You may want to consider whether post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) plays a role in your poor stress-handling ability.

Studies show PTSD alters the body’s ability to regulate cortisol, our primary stress hormone produced by the adrenal glands. People with poor adrenal function suffer from usually either low cortisol or high cortisol.

Altered cortisol levels increase the risk for developing chronic conditions, such as autoimmune disease, chronic pain, or chronic inflammation.

More women suffer from PTSD than men

Not just war veterans suffer from PTSD. In fact, more women than men suffer from PTSD.

Why? For one, more girls than boys suffer sexual abuse as children, predisposing women to more severe reactions to traumas later in life. Researchers also found that sexual trauma causes more emotional suffering and is more likely to contribute to a PTSD than other types of trauma.

Women are also biologically more prone to PTSD than men.

Are your stress hormones to high or too low?

Low cortisol causes low blood sugar, blacking out when standing up, weakness and fatigue, waking up at 3 or 4 a.m., depression, hypersensitivity, and an inability to cope with stress.

High cortisol causes symptoms of insomnia, not feeling rested after sleep, weight gain around the abdomen, anxiety, chronic stress, and hormonal imbalances.

Supporting adrenal function is fundamental to good health. The first place to start is with diet, as many cases of =low or high cortisol are simply a matter of too much sugar and too many processed carbohydrates.

Undiagnosed immune reactions to foods, such as gluten, dairy, egg, and soy can trigger adrenal issues.

An undiagnosed and chronic parasitic, viral, or bacterial infection can take their toll on the body’s stress handling abilities and cause low or high cortisol.

And, of course, lifestyle factors affect adrenal function. Over exercising, over working, not getting enough sleep, or being in a stressful job or relationship can certainly tax your adrenals and lead to altered cortisol.

But if you have been addressed all those and low or high cortisol persists, it’s time to investigate whether PTSD is a contributing factor.

Past traumas and even your parents’ traumas can cause poor adrenal function

Studies have shown that PTSD can cause low or high cortisol. An interesting finding is that people tend to have low cortisol if both parents suffer from PTSD. This is likely due to both the biological effects of PTSD as well as the child’s environment growing up.

Research has also found that low cortisol is more often associated with the PTSD symptoms of avoidance, withdrawal, and isolation, while high cortisol is associated with hyper arousal and re-experiencing traumatic events.

Cortisol plays a significant role in your physical and mental well-being and if you suspect you may have PTSD, it’s important to seek non-pharmaceutical treatments. Fortunately, PTSD is much studied these days and many treatment options exist.

The patient and the doctor play equally important roles in the recovery process. I tell my patients “I can lead you to water, but I can’t make you drink.”

What that means is, the ideal patients to work with are the ones who want to be there. They are the patients that will give it their all. As a doctor, my staff and I work hard to set up food programs, recovery plans, lifestyle changes for our patients. However, we can only do so much. I tell my patients that my goal is to improve their quality of life. In order to achieve that, it’s important to have reciprocity in the process. I can design a plan, but the patient has to follow that plan.

The most valuable asset a doctor can have with his or her patient is trust. Without trust, there is little hope for recovery. Trust within the doctor-patient relationship is an understanding that what we as medical professionals do, is in the best interest of the patient. As long as trust is present, whether its trust in an exercise, trust a diet program or trust a procedure, the patients outcome will be better.

The Controversy of Prescription Drugs

Oftentimes to fight chronic health conditions, doctors will put patients on several different prescription drugs. Many of these drugs have serious sides effects that lead to worsened conditions.

It is not uncommon for me to see patients in my clinic who are on 8, 9, even 10 different medications to treat, lets say Diabetes. What patients, and sometimes doctors, don’t realize is that those medications can actually be causing increased symptoms and might even be the cause of some conditions. A common scenario I see are diabetes patients on insulin medication that see their cholesterol levels rise due to the medication. Suddenly, to lower their cholesterol the doctor prescribes statins. This medication lowers both kinds of cholesterol, good and bad, simultaneously, yet the only kind that should be lowered is the bad. Hence why it’s called ‘bad’. Patients have to address replenishing their good cholesterol (HDL) otherwise they face more serious conditions such as Dementia and Alzheimer’s. To correct their low HDL levels it’s not uncommon to go on another medication, and so the cycle begins – taking more and more medication. Just think about how many side effects 10 different medications can have on the body.

Prescription drugs are not always the answer. It’s important to weigh the benefits AND the risks of taking them. More importantly its imperative to understand how they affect the entire body. They may alleviate one problem, but is that worth it when another one is created in its place?

If you are beginning to get on the cycle of taking more and more prescriptions, yet are still experiencing symptoms, call the Tustin Chronic Condition Center to find out your alternatives.

Family plays a huge part during the recovery process of any patient.  It is very important to make sure the family is on board so that they are updated with how the patient recovers.   In my clinic, I make sure that each family member is up to speed with how their loved one is doing, and what they should be doing for the future.  I find that when I work with a husband and wife, and the wife is being treated for a chronic health condition, the recovery process goes much smoother when the husband is in the loop.  The same goes for any situation.  The goal at Tustin Chronic Condition Center is to improve the quality of life for my patients, and by including the family in the process, that goal can be achieved.

The Importance of The Liver in Chronic Health Conditions

Chronic health conditions have many pieces to their puzzle and oftentimes traditional medical approaches will overlook a specific piece. Since every piece plays such an important role in overall health, neglecting one can cause patients to continually experience symptoms. Thyroid patients are so frequently misdiagnosed by traditional doctors that they experience difficulty understanding how all of their organs work together to keep them healthy. The body is designed for everything to work in unison and when one organ falls out of balance, the body begins to break down. That breakdown translates into increased or prolonged symptoms for anyone suffering from a chronic health condition such as thyroid dysfunction.

The liver is an important organ in the body as some of its primary functions include regulating and purifying the blood. Without a liver, or with serious liver complications, a human being cannot survive. This goes to show that proper liver function is important for overall health. Another function of the liver is the conversion of the thyroid hormone T4 into T3. This conversion is especially important because cells use the converted T3 to maintain all normal body functions. T4 and T3 stand for thyroxine and triiodothyronine respectively.

T3 is an essential hormone that every cell needs. Each cell in the body has a specific receptor for T3 and they use it to facilitate every important body function. The process starts with T4 being released from the thyroid gland which is then converted by the body into T3 for cellular use. 60% of this conversion occurs within the liver which is why the liver must be functioning properly for this conversion to take place. An improperly functioning liver can and will lead to more serious health side effects.

Among the reasons that cause liver dysfunction, the most common are alcohol, medications and the presence of inflammatation. In addition, patients who have had their gallbladder removed are at increased risk for liver related troubles. Once the gallbladder is removed, some of its functions are taken over by the liver, which increase the liver’s already hefty workload. Identifying and avoiding the triggers of liver dysfunction is a key component to reducing symptoms of chronic health conditions.

The first step to take in the process of healing the liver is detoxification, which can be accomplished through several means (supplementation, coffee enemas, detox flushes, etc.) As the second step, a patient must be aware of how to adequately treat his or her body in terms of diet. Inflammatory foods are the liver’s worst enemy and must not be included in the patient’s diet program. Another major trigger is alcohol. Alcohol severely damages the liver and must be taken in moderation or not at all so that a patient can ensure proper liver function.

If you are concerned your doctors are not looking into the liver and how it can be affecting your chronic health condition, call my office to schedule a consultation: (714) 731-7680.

Every week I consult with at least 2-3 patients that always ask, “Dr. King, why is my doctor not talking to me about this information?” and “Dr. King, why will my insurance not pay for your specialized care?”

I explain the reasons at our Thursday night workshops, and almost everyone in attendance seems to ‘get it’ at the time, but…some of those same people still get caught in the ‘trap’.

The ‘trap’! What is it? It is the belief that someone else or something else is responsible for your health! Let me re-word that statement. The greatest threat to your health, is the belief that someone else or something else is responsible for it!

Wow!!! A little in your face? Maybe! Is it the truth? Take it to the bank!

What do I mean by that statement? I am simply saying that it is YOUR responsibility what happens with your health. It is not your doctor’s responsibility, your insurance company’s responsibility, or your friends/family member’s responsibility for you to get healthy! It is YOUR responsibility.

Our society today, whether you agree with this or not, is living in a time that is morally corrupt. The ‘powers that be’ are only interested in one thing, MONEY! By now, you can probably see where I am going with this. Our society is in the hands of money-driven, pharmaceutically based officials that could care less if you are living a quality life.

Medicals doctors are great at working with acute conditions. If you have a heart attack, they are, hopefully, going to be able to save your life. If you break a bone, they will pin it/plate it back together. BUT…when it comes to working with chronic health conditions, our medical model is dropping the ball. Out of 191 countries the United States ranked 37th when measuring the quality of health care systems. Yet, the United States spent more money than any other country on health care…only, to be ranked 37th???

Something is failing!

Yesterday, a husband and wife sat down with me. Great people! We actually went to the same college back east (University of South Carolina). When we reviewed her laboratory results, I was shocked to see that her blood glucose was 151 (85-99 is my healthy range), the HgA1c was 6.9 (it shouldn’t be over 5.6, as this is a diabetes, inflammatory, and cardiovascular disease marker), and her CRP was 6.3 (it shouldn’t be over 3.0, this is a cardiovascular disease marker). So, I ask them…has your doctor discussed you being a diabetic and the risk for cardiovascular disease that you have? Absolutely NOT! The only thing the doctor mentioned was for her to lose weight and that she was pre-insulin resistant!

Can you believe it? This is how her medical doctor was treating her!

Imagine how many more patients are being managed this way! No wonder diabetes is now affecting approximately 25 million Americans each year. It is because of doctors like the one I mentioned above. Don’t get me wrong, there are good doctors out there, but how many patients do you know are going through this?

Patients, YOU, must take that first step! YOU must get serious about figuring out what is truly going on with your health. If your doctors are NOT giving you the right answers, the correct management, and you are sick and tired of taking medications…then find a doctor who cares! Find a doctor who understands what you are going through and is passionate about helping you achieve your health goals!

YOU must get serious about YOUR health, because NO ONE ELSE WILL!!!

I am going to leave you with a quote from the Medicare manual about what they cover: “a treatment plan that seeks to prevent disease, promote health, and prolong and enhance the quality of life; or therapy that is performed to maintain or prevent deterioration of a chronic condition…is NOT a Medicare benefit”

Until next time…

The 6-Week Weight-Loss Challenge!

Are you ready to lose more weight than you ever imagined?

Patients have been asking me to put together a weight-loss plan for years! Patients lose weight in our clinic ALL of the time as they are going through our neurological and metabolic program. However, some people only want to lose weight! So, I have created a 6-week weight-loss program just for them!

Orange County Weight Loss, Orange County Thyroid, Thyroid Weight loss, Tustin Chronic Condition Center

This is not a fad diet! There are no special machines that you need to buy. Heck, there is no work-out plans to follow. Sounds too good to be true, I know…but, TRUST me, I will help you lose the 30-40-50 lbs. you have been trying to loose in 6-weeks.

The program consists of a homeopathic liquid (you might go through several bottles, depending on how much weight you want to lose), a caloric restriction diet, oxygen therapy, vibration therapy and focusing on anti-inflammatory foods.

The program is simple, it costs $595 for six weeks.

This includes your 66-page binder to help you through every step of the way, along with your homeopathic drops.

Part of the program is learning what to eat, so when you are done with your weight-loss program, you know how to keep the weight off! I want you to achieve PERMANENT results, not short term! I will help you with this, every step of the way!

Sign-up here on this webform, or call my clinic…(714) 731-7680), and my office staff will contact you ASAP to schedule your short 30-minute consultation with me, Dr. Corey King, D.C., B.C.I.M., and you will receive your informative binder (explaining how this program works and why) and homeopathic support.

Here is to your weight-loss success!

P.S. – If you are outside of our area, I can still make this program work for you, as I have several patients outside of California who are patients.

Alternative Treatment for Cancer Patients

Six years ago my father was diagnosed with 4th stage throat cancer. At the time, his best option was chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. However, due to the radiation around his neck, a lot of thyroid gland tissue was destroyed and he was then considered a hypothyroid patient. Now, my father must take thyroid support (natural is what I have put him on instead of the prescribed cocktail doses of synthroid or levothyroxine) and he is doing great!

Now, with six years of alternative cancer learning under my belt…if you were to ask me if chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery would be the best option…I would say, “lets try some alternatives first!”

One of those alternatives being the TrueRife machine. In the 1920-30s, Royal R. Rife, a scientific genius, developed a light frequency machine that would later consistently, 100% of the time…destroy cancer! 100% of the time. In the book, The Cancer Cure That Worked!, there reads a statement from Royal Rife in regards to destroying cancer cells: “These successful tests were conducted over 400 times with experimental animals before any attempt was made to use this frequency on human cases of carcinoma and sarcoma”. Rife made this statement referring to his ability to destroy cancer cells successfully, over 400 times, using his frequency machine.

Unfortunately, cover-ups by the American Medical Association (AMA), and the outright lies by several prominent medical doctors pushed and buried this information from reaching those millions of patients who have passed away from cancer.

Rife’s genius work was cast out like a stone by the orthodox medical doctors and pharmaceutical companies…only to allow more people to needlessly pass away from the deadly cancers that they suffered from.

One of the best frequency machines available to us today, is the TrueRife generator. I require all of my cancer patients I work with to use one on a nightly basis, as certain cancer frequencies are being ran through the machine, out of a powerful light bulb, and through their bodies. Don’t worry, it is absolutely painless.

Every cell in our body resonates at a certain frequency. If you can then match that same frequency, you can affect the integrity and life of that cell. This explains what the TrueRife technology is doing. By using certain frequencies, patients are able to help destroy cancer cells inside of their body, giving them a better chance at beating their disease.

To learn more about the TrueRife equipment, you can visit their website, or visit the TrueRife YouTube channel to watch some educational videos.

On my next blog, I will go into a little more detail about the TrueRife machine, why I use it on my cancer patients, and why this is one of the tools in my ‘toolbag’ I use to help cancer patients win the battle against their disease.

The Health Benefits of Juicing!

Recently I decided to see what all this juicing was about.  I have known after studying alternative therapy for cancer patients, that juicing is extremely beneficial at keeping the insides of their body’s alkaline.  Cancer thrives in an acidic environment (lower pH).  If your diet consists of  consuming high amounts of the SAD (standard American diet), you are helping to create an acidic environment for cancer to thrive and survive.  Certain foods are excellent at keeping your “insides” alkaline.  However, it is not as simple as saying ‘cancer thrives in an acidic environment’ and ‘eating certain foods will decrease your acidity’.  Let me turn to this over to Dr. Kevin Conners, an alternative cancer therapy doctor in Minnesota.

“You have to understand physiology; pH of the blood will always be maintained at the expense of the tissue.  A diet high in carbs, additives, flavorings, chemicals, excitotoxins, etc., tend to acidify the system, NOT because they are acidic in themselves, but because of what the body needs to do to detoxify such garbage.  Our bodies do not become alkaline because we drink alkaline water any more than we become acidic because we eat things that have a low pH.  Sure, soda pop is acidifying to the system but NOT because it is acidic (it is), it is acidifying because of the increased (and overwhelming) pressure the accumulation of poor food choices has on the liver and cellular organelles.

How do we alkalize the tissue?  Is that a goal?  Yes and no.  Our goal should be to detoxify and stop toxifying the body by getting back to the way we were meant to eat.  Vegetables and whole fruit help to bring balance back to the system and are alkalizing to the tissue, NOT because they register higher on the pH scale (lemons are extremely acidic) but because of what they do INSIDE us.  They are filled with nutrients and enzymes that aide healing.  Understand, I can destroy a carrot by growing it conventionally with fertilizers and pesticides, process it, blanch it, can it and let it store on a grocers shelf for nine months and THINK I’m doing right by eating vegetables but my carrot side dish may now be equally as acidifying to my system as a can of soda.  It is both the type and quality of food choices that either brings healing or destruction.

Live, raw, organic food is the best alkalizer.  This is why juicing (making your own home-made carrot, apple, celery juice, etc.) is the best.  It is a pre-digested bundle of nutrition that alkalizes your tissue. It also carries an abundant amount of enzymes that assist the breakdown of the acidic ‘slime’ layer of cancer.”

The acidic slime layer forms around cancer cells, decreasing the body’s natural ability to destroy the cell.  Cancer cells are destroying the ‘healthy’ cells at such a rapid rate that the body’s self-detoxifying system can’t remove the sludge of the cell’s destroyed tissue, and this ‘slime layer’ builds up.  This build up prevents your body’s immune system (TH1 cells) from ‘killing’ the cancer cell.

It is for this reason alone, that I recommend cancer patients to be juicing at least 16-24 ounces of vegetable juice a day.  This is also the reason I have decided to begin juicing since my father has suffered both colon and throat cancer.

My favorite juicing recipe:

  • Green apple
  • Kale
  • Celery
  • Beets
  • Carrot
  • Ginger
  • Cucumber
  • Spinach
  • Broccoli

Did you know that your gastrointestinal (GI) system makes up 80% of your immune system? Why is this important? If you are suffering in GI symptoms, this means your body can not fully heal from other conditions!

Many different ‘conditions’ walk into my clinic each day, and one thing that a majority of these chronic conditions have in common is a faulty functioning GI system. Symptoms vary, but the more common ones are the following: bloating, gas, stomach pain, constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, indigestion, and acid reflux. The diagnosis may vary as well: irritable bowel syndrome, heart burn/indigestion/acid reflux, leaky gut syndrome, Crohns Disease/Celiac Disease.

What are the most common causes of the above symptoms/diagnoses? The 3 most common causes I tend to see are: parasites, bacteria, and food sensitivities/allergies. How would you know if you had any of these causes? Your doctors must be performing the appropriate testing. This is why I do stool tests on almost every patient that has GI complications. Since, I am out of network with insurance companies, I get to ‘cherry-pick’ which labs I would like to use, and I ONLY use the BEST! I will give a patient the stool kit to take home, the patients completes the test and mails the specimen off. Results generally take about 3-3 1/2 weeks to get back, but in the meantime I will start the patient off on some natural herbs I use to kill bacteria, parasites, yeast, fungi, and mold. I like to start working on the elimination of the ‘critters’ in the very beginning. The reason I rely on the stool test results is to tell me how long it might take to get rid of the ‘critters’.

When it comes to food sensitivities/allergies, there is 1 lab in the country that performs at the highest level, Cyrex Laboratories. I encourage you to visit their website, to learn more about the different arrays used for testing. Hands down, this IS THE BE

ST lab in the country for sensitivity testing.

If you have been to your medical doctor or your GI specialist, but are still having symptoms, they are missing a piece of your puzzle! If you would like to have a second opinion, contact my office staff at (714) 731-7680.

Are you looking for tips on losing weight? Are you expecting this article to be another waste of your time discussing the easiest way to lose weight? If so, go ahead and save yourself some time and calories and jump to the next “You will lose 50 pounds in 50 days website!” because this information is not for you!

However, if you are sick and tired of all the fad diets out there, continue to read on, as I know this information will peak your interest.

I hear this same plead from new patients on a daily basis: “Dr. King, I have tried dieting, I have joined this weight loss program, I have exercised…I have basically starved myself…BUT I can’t lose weight!!!”

Have you tried all the weight loss secrets? Followed a particular food plan to the “T”, but still only lost 10-15 pounds…only to gain it back in several months down the road? Maybe you have tried the quick weight loss supplements that are advertised in the magazines and on TV infomercials. And the end result has always been the same = frustration!!!

Why, if you are trying so hard to lose weight, are you still not shedding the pounds like you would expect? You must think of the bigger picture – A SICK BODY DOES NOT LOSE WEIGHT!

Wait a minute…most people think that if you are sick, you drop weight! I am not talking about the flu/cold/mono/etc. I am talking about having an underlying health condition: adrenal fatigue, gut dysfunction, or a thyroid gland condition.

Let me start with gut dysfunction. In the last 3 weeks, I have seen and tested 3 new patients that all had H. Pylori, parasites, and bacterium within their gastro-intestinal tract. Did they know it? NO! Did their doctor test for it? NO! Did they all have gastro-intestinal symptoms? NO! If your GI system is being ‘attacked’ from bacterium and parasites, it will be in a chronic state of inflammation (bloatiness for some) and the gut lining (small intestines) will NOT be able to absorb vitamins and minerals.

Think about his for a minute…if your GI system, which is 80% of your immune system, is chronically inflamed (you do NOT always have symptoms as your gut lining does NOT have pain fibers) and is not absorbing vitamins and minerals, what do you think the chances are that you will have a healthy metabolism? Slim to none!

Then you start to add in constipation and elimination difficulties, food sensitivities/allergies, and conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome/Crohn’s Disease/Celiac Disease…and losing weight becomes a tougher task to perform.

If you have read some of my last posts, you will know that the adrenal glands affect how blood sugar is controlled, as well as how the thyroid gland is working. Your thyroid gland is the master controller of metabolism (controlled by the hypothalamus and pituitary gland). Majority of women/men that I see in the clinic with weight loss difficulties, have either adrenal gland dysfunction and/or thyroid gland dysfunction. These same patients have been put on Synthroid, Armour Thyroid, and Levothyroxine…BUT, they are still having the same symptoms = fatigue, weight loss difficulties, hair loss, sleep issues, and hormone abnormalities.

If your body is suffering from any of the above conditions, you have a SICK BODY! If you are still struggling with symptoms, regardless of the medication you are on, or diets you have tried, or personal trainer you have hired…then your doctors might be missing some crucial pieces to your health puzzle!

If you would like to discuss this further, contact my staff at (714) 731-7680 to schedule a consultation. Sometimes, the first step is the toughest…but, you must take that first step in order to improve the quality of your life!

I am going to share something with you…I have cheated!

I have cheated many times, by ordering Domino’s Pizza! Yes, I admit it, I love pizza. Greasy, cheap, delivered-to-your door, pizza! Am I the only one?

Maybe your cheat food isn’t pizza. Maybe it is ice cream, pastries or even a ton of carbs that you wont burn off the next morning.

My question is this: what are you unwilling to give up, to be healthy?

I gave up ordering Domino’s Pizza two years ago. Let me tell you why. Anytime my better-half, Natasha, would go out of town for work, I viewed it as my time to sneak some pizza, while I binge watched House, M.D. on Netflix.

The problem was, I would feel horrible for two days after. I mean, I would be in bed recuperating for those days. I would push myself through work, only to come and crash. If I had a day off the following day, I would lay on the couch with tissue surrounding me (still watching House, M.D.).

The funny part to this whole story was I would get busted every time I cheated. I would try and put the pizza boxes at the bottom of the garbage bin, piling other trash on top. To no avail, my secret was never safe.

What are you doing, deliberately, to sabotage your own health?

I knew eating that delicious, cheesy (sometimes to make myself feel better I would order without the cheese) pizza was going to cause inflammation, affecting my gut and sinuses.

How does your vice, affect your health? And…why are you still doing it? Is eating poorly, purposely, affecting your ability to move forward with improving your health condition? If so, what will it take for you to stop continuing down this path?

Free Recipes to Get You on Track!

Click the link below, and you will receive some free recipes to help you get back on the right track. These are recipes that we use on a weekly basis.

One other idea: Get a good cookbook. Each week, your challenge is to pick one new recipe and cook it. If you like it, put a green sticky note (the little skinny ones) on the page. If you don’t, put a red sticky note. If you did that, consistently, for 1-3 months, you would have a ton of recipes that you could turn to each week, to help substitute those cheat meals.

I see it every day, patients come into the clinic suffering from thyroid gland disorder and they are on medications, but they are still suffering from fatigue, gastro-instestinal dysfunction, insomnia, weight gain/loss, loss of hair, lack of sex drive and depression.

Yet, the endocrinologist/primary care physician HAS NOT ran a complete blood test on them. If your doctor is not running adequate blood tests and saliva tests, you will be mis-diagnosed, and ultimately…mis-managed in your attempt to achieve the health results you deserve.

You must think of your body like a jig-saw puzzle

If a couple of the pieces are left off the table, then the picture will never be complete. For instance, most doctors only run TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) and T4 on their patients (8 times out of 10, this is what I see). However, they are on medication (Synthroid, Armour, Levothyroxine, etc). and are still having symptoms. Did you know that 90% of those diagnosed with hypothyroidism are suffering from an autoimmune condition? The only way to determine this is by running the TPO and TBG anti-bodies.

Has your doctor ran your TPO and TBG anti-bodies to determine if you are suffering from an autoimmune attack onto your thyroid gland? No? Then one piece of your puzzle just ‘fell’ onto the floor!

Did you know that the adrenal glands affect your hypothalamus and pituitary gland?

…which, ultimately affects how much TSH is released? Your adrenal glands are the ‘stress glands’ of the body: chemical, emotional, and physical stress. Did your doctor run a salivary test to take samples of cortisol through out the day? If not, this could be a piece of your puzzle missing from the equation. One good marker that helps to evaluate the cortisol stress response is reverse T3.

Have you been on any hormones through out your life?

Birth control or hormone replacement therapy? If so, this could have affected how the pituitary gland releases TSH. Did your doctor run your free T4, free thyroxine index, free T3 or reverse T3? These are more pieces to your health puzzle.

Did you know there is a gut connection with the brain?

That if ‘activated’ can also affect the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland? More to come on this in a future blog.

If you are still suffering from thyroid gland symptoms and you are taking medications, but you are still not reaching your health goals…I highly encourage you to contact my staff at (714) 731-7680 to schedule your consultation.

As we’ve discussed in previous blogs, the Interactive Metronome® focuses on the ability of the frontal lobe of the brain to keep timing and rhythm—basically, the frontal lobe controls the body’s motor functions, including coordination. It also controls additional functions, like personality, thoughts and reflexes. And reflexes are something that an athlete wants at their very best if they are to excel at their chosen sport.

When we have athletes at our clinic to use the Interactive Metronome, they are using the machine’s activities to sharpen their reflexes, their response time and their coordination skills.

AskDrKing’s founder and owner Dr. Corey King is an avid motocross/supercross rider, and has helped many of his fellow racers exceed their peers by using the Interactive Metronome. For these motocross riders, they need their reflexes working at their peak, and hand-to-eye motor coordination is essential, especially when a wrong move could result in injury. If their frontal lobe is not firing efficiently, then their reflexes will not be able to respond effectively while they are playing or participating in their sport.

Actually, most athletes need this level of reflex action and coordination.

Think of a quarterback in a football game—he needs to get the ball and quickly survey the field for the teammate in the best position to receive it, and that person is probably a moving target. Hand-to-eye coordination and quick reflexes are indispensable in that situation. What about soccer? Did you know that many basketball players, like Kobe Bryant for example, have played soccer in Europe to improve their coordination and ability to maneuver on the court? The Interactive Metronome can help all athletes improve their skills in their sport, pushing their performance up to the next level, from balance to speed of movement.

With the Super Bowl just around the corner, there are probably many young football stars-to-be who are looking forward to upping their game next season. Do you want to show your coach that you’re ready for Junior Varsity, or even Varsity? Looking for a sports scholarship to help out with those college tuition fees?

The Interactive Metronome can help athletes with these goals.

With the Interactive Metronome, the athletes get something they are already obsessed with: Stats. The Metronome records the athletes’ progress, showing them where they are improving and where they need work. Not only can we refine their activities on the Metronome by providing feedback to help them excel in certain specific areas, these naturally competitive athletes can pit themselves against their past results to really see improvement.

And there is no age limit for the Interactive Metronome!

From 5 to 105, the Interactive Metronome can “build up the muscles” in the frontal cortex to improve motor coordination and create lightning-fast reflexes.

If you have a budding athlete in junior or high school, or if you are an athlete who wants to really improve your performance, please call us at (714) 731-7680 to make an appointment with Dr. Corey King and the Interactive Metronome or sign up our schedule a consultation form. Our new Interactive Metronome® helps us work with and improve the function of the frontal cortex. The fontal cortex controls things like impulsiveness and attention span, and it’s where the personality “lives”. It’s also where things like depression and anxiety are created, and for these children it’s the region in the brain that’s not working as well as it could be.

The frontal cortex’s function is like how the brakes work on a car. If the brakes aren’t operating on a car, they can’t be applied, and the car cannot stop.

And that is the best analogy for children dealing with autism and ADHD!

Using the timing exercise program on the Interactive Metronome (IM), it strengthens the region of the frontal cortex, like how lifting weights will strengthen a muscle. With the IM, you can do it with the feedback mechanism from the visual therapy and sound therapy, which causes the frontal cortex to work harder and process the information supplied.

When a child’s frontal cortex is deficient in these areas, and they enter a noisy playroom with bright toys and other, unfamiliar children, the frontal cortex has difficulty processing all of the new information. In response, the child will act out, act aggressively or withdraw.

We can mimic this type of stimuli with the IM, and with repetition, improve the function of the frontal cortex. And, more importantly, we can measure the child’s progress by using the IM. It records objective data from the timing exercises down to the hundredth of a millisecond, giving us an essential way to track the frontal cortex’s improvements.

In this way, we eventually “fix the brakes on the car” and give the frontal cortex the ability to control its functions.

And the best part is that the children love using the IM!

Sometimes we need to start certain children with basic therapies to ascertain their needs before moving on to the visual or sound therapies. Some need to have their frontal cortex built up with more basic therapies before auditory or visual stimulation begins, as it may be overwhelming for their system.

Once they start improving, we assess whether auditory or visual input will serve the patient better and start tracking the data. We also use neurological exams to find out which area of the brain is working less efficiently—the left or right brain—and we focus on that side.

One question we get asked a lot is:

What if my son or daughter hasn’t been diagnosed with ADHD or autism, but I’ve noticed that they have lost focus at school? Or—my child is not engaging with other classmates very well anymore? Can they be helped by the neurological therapy and the Interactive Metronome?

Our answer is always YES.

You don’t have to wait until a teacher points out your child’s lack of focus in class, or have a doctor give your child a prescription for ADHD medication before you bring your child in for an evaluation at AskDrKing.

We’ve already had great success with children in strengthening their frontal cortex using such therapies as eye exercises, smell therapy or sound therapy, but now the IM gives us the objective data. This is really what is going to send our clients’ response through the roof—therapies that are fun for the kids that also provide a concrete progress report for us to track their success.

By using the Interactive Metronome as a diagnostic tool, we can also help parents understand how their child’s control over their ability to respond to the IM’s visual and auditory stimuli is directly linked to the ADHD, or other special situation. We are able to show the parents the child’s score and how they compare by using objective data from other children in their age group. By using this comparative scale, we show the parents how their child is ranking, and how we can help them improve those response times.

If you would like to see your child’s working memory, attention span, reading capability and motor coordination improve without medication, please call us and make an appointment for an evaluation. Case studies have seen children with ADHD significantly improve their ability to interact with peers, engage in new motor activities without frustration, reduced aggression and impulsivity, increased reading capability and language processing.

AskDrKing is very excited to announce a new arrival at our clinic—the Interactive Metronome® machine.

Many of our patients and readers may not recognize the name of this machine, or know what it does, but when we explain its amazing capabilities, we know that Orange County parents will also be excited that it is now available at our clinic.

So what does the Interactive Metronome do?

It is a computer-based technology that enhances motor skills in children and adults, and can improve performance-based skills such as speech and communication, coordination and learning.

At AskDrKing, we’ve had exceptional success with young patients dealing with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and autism, and the introduction of the Interactive Metronome is going to accelerate their progress enormously. The Interactive Metronome produces significant gains in children in the areas of concentration, motor planning, control of aggression, language processing and reading, according to a clinical study. This study’s findings correlate with recent research on the brain’s growth that indicates that environmental influences, not just genetics, can assist in a child’s development.

The best part?

Kids love the Interactive Metronome, as it combines the principles of the traditional musical metronome (which you may remember from your piano lessons years ago!) with the accuracy and creativity of a personal computer to create engaging training exercises. The Interactive Metronome’s unique program uses headphones and hand and foot sensors so that users can coordinate movements to computer-generated music. The program has a patented guidance system that challenges users to improve their performance as it progresses over time, and the immediate feedback from the computer gives participants the impetus and desire to advance their abilities.

Overall, patients have seen improvement in working memory, attention span, information processing and sequencing and motor coordination. Case studies have seen children significantly improve their ability to interact with peers, engage in new motor activities without frustration, reduced aggression and impulsivity, increased reading capability and language processing.

There are only 15,000 providers with Interactive Metronomes across the United States and Canada, and AskDrKing happens to be the only one in Orange County with one in residence. If you would like a consultation on how the Interactive Metronome can help your child with ADHD, autism or other special needs, please call us now on (714) 731-7680 or use our online schedule a consultation form. We anticipate a large response, so please don’t delay in making an appointment.

Many patients I work with must stop drinking coffee in order for their body’s to heal. Why? Here are some of the major reasons why I am not a fan of coffee:

  • It is a stimulate, which is why people drink it. However, if your adrenal glands’ ability to function is already hindered, throwing more gasoline onto the fire is not the ideal way to go. Caffeine drives the adrenal glands further down the road of no return.
  • Coffee is very acidic. The body can’t heal if it is acidic. Cancer loves an acidic environment. The only part of your body you want acidic, is your stomach.
  • Coffee leaches calcium out of bones. Osteopenia/osteoperosis is one condition women become concerned about down the road.
  • Coffee cross-reacts with gluten. If you have a gluten sensitivity, or have Hashimoto’s Disease, stay far way from coffee.
  • Who wants to smell coffee breath, anyway???

I Can’t Drink Coffee….Ahhhhhhhhh!!!

This is my new favorite morning, hot drink. However, I must give credit where credit is due and it was my lovely, beautiful Natasha who gave me this idea and recipe! Behind every good man, is a great woman 🙂

Let’s Get Started!

Warm almond or coconut milk (you may use water if want). While it is warming, I begin to combine my Energy Boost products in my favorite mug:

  1. 1 TSP of Matcha Tea (this is a type of green tea)
  2. 1 capsule of Premier Turmeric (I get this from Premier Research Labs)
  3. 1 TSP of cinnamon
  4. 1 TSP of cardamon
  5. 1 BIG TSP of Extra Virgin Coconut oil

Mix it all together, and BAM!!! You have a power packed warm drink in the morning that won’t hold you back from healing, if anything you will love the way you feel after drinking it.

For those that rely on coffee to make you…cough cough…”go” in the morning, fear not…this will still get the bowels moving!

Give it a try and tell me what you think!

Suffering From Vertigo? AskDrKing Finds Solutions That Traditional Medicine Doesn’t

Dizziness and vertigo can be really easy, or really difficult to manage for us. Many of these patients go to a medical doctor first, and the doctor usually diagnoses them with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). These patients can get better within a few days, but in many instances with BPPV, the doctors just prescribe medication that doesn’t actually help them at all.

When they come into our clinic in AskDrKing, we find that many of these patients who have been diagnosed with BPPV have actually been misdiagnosed—like many of our clinic’s thyroid patients.

The cerebellum, the foundation of the brain, controls the vestibular nerve, which controls the inner ear organs. The BPPV patients that are given the medication are typically the patients that are not improving—or, in other words, the drug doesn’t work. These patients also tend to be the ones who are suffering from cerebellum degeneration, which affects both postural muscles and the vestibular nerve.

At the AskDrKing, we do a simple neurological exam on these patients, and most of the time it is very easy for us to see that it is a cerebellum dysfunction. We then start neurological rehabilitation to strengthen the cerebellum and the vestibular nerve. This, in turn, helps stabilize the inner ear organs, reducing the dizziness and vertigo.

There are several reasons why the cerebellum is damaged

Of course, trauma is an obvious cause of brain damage, but it could also be down to the “bad oil in the motor” syndrome that we see here so often. This refers to such problems as metabolic disorders like anemia, gut issues and gall bladder issues. But especially anemia. Did you know that there are twelve different types of anemia, and “anemia” doesn’t just mean you’re low on iron in your blood?

Many people don’t, and most medical doctors don’t test for all anemia types. In fact, they don’t usually even do the complete bloodwork for iron testing, and iron is the main way that the blood gets oxygen to your brain. If it can’t get oxygen, it’s basically starving, and that’s when the dizziness begins.

Most of the patients that come to us for dizziness and vertigo also have chronic anemia. It doesn’t surprise us at all. Many also have metabolic problems, which can contribute even further to cerebellum damage, including blood sugar issues and adrenal glands releasing cortisol into the bloodstream that negatively affects the brain.

Did you know that your cerebellum needs more oxygen than any other part of your body, and any other part of your brain? This is why many of our thyroid patients also have vertigo. With chronic thyroid patients, the “bad oil” (blood) has been destroying the “motor” (brain) for some time, i.e. their metabolic or other issues have been attacking their body for some time, and the first thing it attacks is the cerebellum, hence the dizziness.

Chronic dizziness or vertigo isn’t just about an inner ear problem or disorientation, it’s a symptom of a larger problem, usually metabolic, that is destroying the body. Some patients have a genetic disposition against dairy or eggs, and this can cause the body to attack itself, and in some cases, even attack the cerebellum tissue. We’ve had a vertigo patient that was doing really well, but she went to an event recently and ate the foods that she was genetically disposed to—she ended up in bed for two full days because her vertigo returned with a vengeance. Her medical doctors had not seen this link, and it was only under our care for the last six months that she had started improving.

If you have been put on medication for vertigo and it’s not working, please make an appointment with me, Dr. Corey King, immediately. At our AskDrKing clinic, we will run the right panels of labwork and perform the right tests to truly find the underlying cause of your problem, not just treat the symptoms with ineffective medication. We will look at food sensitivities, adrenal gland disorders, thyroid function—anything that could be affecting the brain’s functionality. Vertigo is almost always the sign of a larger problem, so treating just the vertigo is never enough.
